Artful Neighbors
The Challenge:Major institutions often exist in "bubbles," disconnected from the immediate needs of their surrounding neighborhoods. In Los Angeles, many local elementary schools and recreational centers lack the budget for high-quality art supplies and mentorship. The challenge was to create a sustainable "circular economy" for art materials while building meaningful social bridges between university students and local youth.
The Strategy:I developed the "Artful Neighbors" framework to serve as a catalyst for positive change. The strategy is built on three pillars: Resource Redistribution, Artistic Mentorship, and Exhibition Advocacy. By mapping out the local "artistic desert" (identifying nearby schools and centers), the project proposes a systematic way for USC to donate surplus materials and provide student-led mentorship.
Strategic Highlights:
Asset Mapping: Conducted a geographic analysis of the neighborhood to identify key partners, such as local elementary schools and community hubs in Downtown LA and Little Tokyo.
The Circular Economy Model: Designed a system for the collection and donation of art supplies, reducing institutional waste while providing essential resources to underfunded local programs.
Mentorship Framework: Established a pairing system that connects university art students with local youth, providing real-world professional development for the students and inspiration for the youth.
Networking & Advocacy: Created a roadmap for students to connect with local artists and educators, opening doors for future careers in community development and the arts.
Sustainability Focus: Positioned the initiative as an "inclusive and sustainable" journey, where every donated material contributes to long-term community resilience.
The Result:A comprehensive social impact brief that transforms the relationship between a university and its neighbors. Artful Neighbors provides a scalable model for how creative institutions can give back, ensuring that the arts remain a universal tool for expression, regardless of socioeconomic background.
Key Deliverables:
Community Engagement Brief: A strategic plan for building bonds between USC Roski and the local LA community.
Resource Redistribution System: A logistical framework for donating art supplies and educational materials.
Mentorship & Exhibition Roadmap: Guidelines for pairing students with mentors and showcasing work in local galleries.
Partnership Map: A visual identification of local stakeholders, including schools, centers, and museums.
