Urban Visions
Magazine
The Challenge:Media often simplifies or exploits Black narratives, perpetuating stereotypes that have deep historical roots. The goal of the Urban Visions series was to create a space for critical "media literacy"—using the accessible format of a zine to educate readers on the complexities of representation, from the Blaxploitation era to the modern streaming age.
The Strategy:I acted as both Editor-in-Chief and Lead Designer for these issues. My strategy was to pair dense, scholarly critiques with a bold, "Urban Visionary" aesthetic. By utilizing high-contrast typography and iconic archival imagery, I ensured that the heavy subject matter remained engaging and visually impactful.
Issue Highlights:
Issue 01: The Jezebel: A critical examination of the "Jezebel" trope. I tracked this harmful stereotype from its historical origins to its manifestation in Hollywood, contrasting it with the "Revolution in Cinema" led by figures like Pam Grier in the Blaxploitation era.
Issue 02: The Black TV Family: An analysis of the "Cornerstone of Culture." This issue charts the evolution of Black families on screen—from the groundbreaking portrayals in The Cosby Show and The Fresh Prince to the nuanced, complex dynamics in Black-ish and modern anthology series.
Behind the Scenes: Dedicated sections exploring the vital role of Black writers and producers in reclaiming these narratives and ensuring cultural authenticity.
Future Outlook: Each issue concludes with a look toward a more inclusive future, advocating for intersectional representation that includes LGBTQ+, Muslim, and indigenous Black voices.
The Result: Urban Visions stands as a testament to the power of "Design for Change." This series demonstrates a high level of proficiency in Adobe InDesign, content curation, and sociological research, making it a standout example of how creative work can drive social discourse.
Key Deliverables:
Full-Length Digital Zines: Two complete issues (20+ pages each) featuring original essays and curated imagery.

Cultural Audit & Research: In-depth analysis of media history, trope evolution, and industry statistics.
Typography & Image Curation: A sophisticated blend of modern "street" aesthetics with historical archival photography.
